Profile of Bruce Beutler

Bruce Beutler is a pioneer in finding both dominant and recessive mutations that cause alteration or impairment of normal immune function. His work established that the Toll-like receptors (TLRs) serve as the key sensors used by the mammals to perceive infection. This conclusion rested upon the positional cloning of a mutation (Lps) that prevented mice from sensing bacterial lipopolysaccharide [Poltorak et al., Science 282:2085-2088 (1998)]. Since that time, he has established many of the essential proteins that are active in TLR signal transduction. Dr Beutler has recently identified a novel TLR-independent immunoadjuvant pathway which is driven by programmed cell death. This finding may have a major impact on our understanding on how adaptive immune responses are triggered. Bruce Beutler is professor at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA, USA.

Profile of Ronald Levy

Ron Levy is a pioneer in development of immunotherapy in the treatment of B cell lymphomas. He has made seminal contributions to passive immunotherapy of B lymphomas by use of anti-CD20 mAb (Rituximab). He has over many years developed active immunization with monoclonal antibody produced by B lymphomas [so called idiotype (Id) vaccination]. Ron Levy is professor of Medicine and Chief of Division of Oncology at Stanford University. The seminar should be of interest to immunologists, hematologists and oncologists.
